Bio
Maggie was raised in Derwood, Maryland by her teacher mom and scientist dad. She was always passionate about science, math, and education, and she wanted to follow in both of her parents’ footsteps when she grew up. After graduating at the top of her high school class, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).
From a young age, she was interested in helping her peers understand the topics they were learning together, assisting them in building confidence so they could feel proud of their efforts and level of understanding. That interest naturally grew into a love of tutoring, which she pursued unofficially in high school and officially in college through Caltech’s RISE program, serving underprivileged LA-area high school students.
After graduation, she taught math, technology, and engineering in private schools for five years. One of the parts of teaching she enjoyed the most was tutoring students after school so she could individualize her delivery to their specific needs, and she is very happy to be able to help more students get the one-on-one instruction that will best help them succeed through PrepMatters. Outside of tutoring, Maggie can frequently be found reading, rock climbing, or spending time with her dog.
Philosophy
I love getting to know how my students’ brains work so I can map out delivery methods that will function best for them. When their teacher’s explanations aren’t working for my students, I endeavor to customize their instruction so I can bridge that gap with them efficiently and effectively. My favorite part of tutoring is seeing the moment of realization when a student finally feels like they “get” the concepts that confused or frustrated them and seeing the happiness or relief that comes with that moment. Struggling in classes can become a demoralizing negative feedback loop, and I consider helping my students break that cycle to be a key part of my role as a tutor. My greatest hope when working with students that I help them both achieve their academic goals and feel confident in their competence so they can tackle new challenges head on.
