Jim Diamondidis grew up in Annapolis, Maryland and attended Harvard College. At Harvard, he studied theoretical mathematics and was a teaching assistant for cool courses like set theory, group theory, and topology. After graduating, Jim taught high school math and middle school theater at Washington Latin here in DC, and also started a local after school math program for elementary schoolers. Jim has had the privilege of working with students of all ages, but he most enjoys working with middle and high schoolers.
Outside of the classroom, Jim can be found doing almost anything (not unlike “the most interesting man in the world” of Dos Equis commercial fame). He has written and starred in his own musical, lived as a ski bum in Utah, and worked as a farmer in rural Guatemala. Nowadays, Jim plays a whole lot of tennis and pickleball, climbs, cooks, and paints. His paintings have been shown at several galleries across the DMV.
PHILOSOPHY
My goal as a tutor is to foster independent, confident learners (who no longer need me as a tutor!) Confidence is key for academic performance, especially in math, and so I always stay exceptionally cheerful and positive during tutoring sessions. Confidence helps students stay calm and perform their best under pressure. I teach students strategies for breaking down complex problems into manageable pieces, and I always emphasize understanding over memorization, so that students develop a durable conceptual foundation that lasts.
