Marla grew up in the smallest state where she attended the University of Rhode Island and completed the Honors Program. She completed a thesis investigating feminine voice in popular literature, which culminated in a final presentation to faculty and students.
Marla then made her way across the country where she worked in a private school for two years. During that time, she missed higher education and decided to pursue her Master’s. She missed seasons, specifically fall, and wearing scarves.
She attended UMass Amherst earning her Master’s in English with a focus on American Literature. She most enjoyed interdisciplinary work with the comparative literature and fiction departments.
Marla moved to the DMV area to be closer to a large city and has been in the area for 11 years. She has taught high school in DC and charter schools. She currently teaches Honors English 12 and AP Literature in Montgomery County Public Schools.
During her free time Marla enjoys exploring coffee shops, hiking trails, and museums
Philosophy
Writing is a journey and I love teaching that journey! My goal is to help students feel like writing, regardless of the assignment, is a manageable task and to help build their confidence with every sentence and draft.
