HSPT Test Prep and Tutoring

Get Prepared for the HSPT

Preparing for admission to private and independent high schools schools often includes navigating specialized testing requirements—and for many students, that means the High School Placement Test (HSPT). While commonly associated with Catholic schools, the HSPT is also used by some independent schools and for academic placement or scholarship consideration. Unlike the SSAT or ISEE, the HSPT is a fast-paced exam that challenges students with both content and timing.

At PrepMatters, we offer expert HSPT tutoring designed to help students meet these unique demands. Our personalized, one-on-one instruction helps local students build confidence, improve speed and accuracy, and perform their best on test day.

What is the HSPT test and why does it require a different kind of preparation?

The High School Placement Test (HSPT) stands apart from more commonly known admissions exams like the SSAT and ISEE. While it is widely used by Catholic high schools, some non-Catholic private schools also use it for admissions, placement, or scholarship awards.

The HSPT is known for its speed—it’s the most time-pressured of the three tests, often leaving students scrambling to finish. It also includes question types such as logical reasoning and spelling that aren’t typically found on similar entrance exams.

With nearly 300 questions packed into roughly 2.5 hours of testing time, students need not only strong foundational knowledge but also the pacing skills and focus to perform well under pressure.

  • Timed Practice Sessions: Students work through realistic HSPT questions under timed conditions to build both endurance and familiarity.
  • Strategic Thinking: With no penalty for guessing, it’s critical to know how to work efficiently. We help students develop a tactical mindset—prioritizing easier questions, making quick decisions, and maximizing scoring potential.

HSPT Tutoring Reviews from Local Families

“I recommend Prep Matters often. Ashley has been a steady force for our son as he navigated various math levels throughout high school. She provided just the right amount of instruction, encouragement and guidance. It’s been a relief to have Prep Matters here to help supplement and support school instruction. We have also been lucky to have tutors Vinnie and Moose for test prep (HSPT and SAT). They definitely eased the stress with test taking skills and tactics for both of our sons.”

Common HSPT Questions

The total testing time is approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, spread across five sections. Including instructions and breaks, expect the entire session to last about 3 hours.

There are 298 multiple-choice questions in total across the five standard sections.

HSPT scores are complex, often reported as standard scores (200-800 scale), national percentiles (NP), local percentiles (LP), and composite scores. “Good” depends heavily on the specific schools you’re applying to. Generally, aiming for a National Percentile above the 50th is average, above the 75th is strong, and 85th-90th+ is often competitive for top schools/scholarships in the DC and Montgomery County areas.

Costs vary based on the tutor’s qualifications and session frequency. Contact us for specific pricing details.
