What Is the LSAT and How Can a Tutor Help?

The Law School Admission Test (LSAT) is the most important standardized test for law school applicants in the U.S. and Canada. While some programs now accept the GRE, most admissions committees still view a strong LSAT score as the gold standard, especially at top-tier law schools. The LSAT tests critical thinking, argument analysis, logical reasoning, and reading comprehension—not legal knowledge. It’s designed to assess whether you can think like a lawyer under pressure.

At PrepMatters, we understand this pressure. Our LSAT tutors have helped students from all backgrounds improve their scores by teaching the most efficient and adaptable strategies for each section. We stay current with all LSAT changes, including the 2024 test format update, and guide students through both the updated Logical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension sections with clarity and confidence. If you’re aiming to get into a competitive law program, a strong LSAT score can make all the difference.

Deconstructing the LSAT: Mastering Reasoning & Reading

With the removal of Logic Games, mastering Logical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension is more critical than ever. Our LSAT classes methodology focuses intensely on these areas:

Logical Reasoning (LR)

2 Scored Sections | 70 Minutes Total

This section tests your ability to analyze, strengthen, or challenge arguments. We teach a proven framework for breaking down arguments efficiently, spotting logical fallacies, and recognizing common question patterns. Our LSAT logic training sharpens both accuracy and speed.

Reading Comprehension (RC)

1 Scored Section | 35 Minutes

This section involves reading dense passages and answering questions about tone, structure, and inference. Our LSAT reading strategies focus on active reading for structure and intent. We train you to extract key ideas quickly, anticipate question types, and avoid misleading answer traps.

Common LSAT Questions

The multiple-choice portion of the LSAT consists of four 35-minute sections (two Logical Reasoning, one Reading Comprehension, one unscored variable section), taking approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes, plus a short break. The required LSAT Writing sample is completed separately online at your convenience and takes about 35 minutes.

The LSAT has a reputation for being challenging because it tests reasoning skills in ways that differ from typical academic exams. The logic can be unfamiliar, and the reading passages are dense.

Score goals depend heavily on your target law schools. Generally, 150s, may be sufficient for regional or less selective schools. 160+ is considered a strong score. 170+ is typically needed to be competitive for T14 law schools.

LSAT scores are valid and reportable by LSAC for five testing years after the year in which you tested.
