  • How does the world work? Social science classes can seem overwhelming, filled with an endless stream of names, dates, and terms to memorize. You already know that you need to learn the who, what, where, when, and why of history, politics, and society – but how do you even figure out what’s important and make the best use of your time? Our tutors are excited help you learn to navigate through all this information, to see patterns and trends, and to make an argument backed by supporting evidence.

There is no math gene. Really there isn’t. Anyone who’s willing to do some work can get better at math. Our group of math geeks just love working with kids to help better understand the guiding principles that underlie the problems they’re solving and not just showing “how to do the problem.” Once students understand those principles, they must be solidified through repetition and that’s where the hard work comes in. But there’s nothing like the joy of understanding and getting the right answers to make that hard work more fun!

Effectively learning science is about two things: knowing how to ask the right questions and knowing how to organize the answers to those questions. Our tutors know when to focus on each with their students. Some students learn best in a Socratic fashion, with the tutor providing the right questions to nudge understanding while modeling the questions students need to ask themselves as they work through problems. Other students are more comfortable with an organized framework presented to them first and thrive when they can see all the connections laid out in front of them.

Strong critical reading and writing skills are the cornerstones of success in high school and college – and beyond! The best thing students can do to improve these skills is practice them every single day. But if they need a boost, our team of word nerds can work with students to identify and develop their talent for language. Deciphering Shakespeare or Salinger, expressing ideas clearly and effectively, or brushing up on the nitty-gritty of grammar – all are possible with patience and a desire to improve.
