John Jones has been ACT and SAT tutoring at PrepMatters since 2001. He prepares students for the SAT, SAT Subject Tests, SSAT/ISEE/HSPT, PSAT, and ACT.  Mr. Jones began tutoring in high school, serving as Vice-President of Tutoring for a high school service organization. His tutoring experience continued through college and has also included work with the AmeriCorps National Service Program and the Boys and Girls Club of Maryland. After graduating from Dartmouth College with a BA in Economics, he worked in financial services and earned his Series 6 and Series 7 licenses.

One of my ACT and SAT tutoring goals is to help students overcome any negative expectations in relation to standardized tests. By becoming familiar with the test makers’ intent and with our own testing tendencies, we can maximize our performance. Thoughtful practice and review can help to mitigate and even eliminate any real or perceived obstacles. I like to remind students that there is always more they can do and more we can do as a team, to improve their performance on a test.

We weren’t anticipating much from a test prep organization, but it seems like ‘everyone does it’ so we didn’t want our son to be at a disadvantage. We researched many organizations, and learned that PrepMatters was, consistently, highly recommended by friends and neighbors who’d been down this path.  Our son immediately bonded with John Jones, the tutor who was recommended as his match.  John’s kind and gentle manner — combined with his intellect, his vast and detailed knowledge of the SAT and ACT testing process, and his patience — worked wonders for our son.  Our son actually looked forward to his sessions with John Jones, never once complaining about heading off to test preparation.  John did an amazing job of helping our son develop test strategies, and he guided our son in learning which type of test our son prefers as between the SAT and the ACT.  John Jones also built our son’s confidence in his test abilities and skills. The actual test results were very positive, a true measure of the test preparation provided by John Jones!

We were 100% pleased with John Jones’ SAT tutoring for our son — it was a substantial investment, but worth every penny.  We tried other group SAT prep classes, but found they were not helpful at all in identifying specific areas where our son needed improvement, so John’s individualized tutoring was a great find.  Our son eventually scored well enough to get into his first choice of college, including an 800 on the written section of the SAT.

John was an awesome tutor to our daughter. He was incredibly helpful in helping her prepare for the ACT by reviewing and teaching her concepts and strategies for testing success and – maybe even more importantly – he was kind, caring, and encouraging. Our daughter was going to be away for most of the summer so he met with her before she left to set out a study plan that was very targeted and not overwhelming. Once she was back in town she met with John twice a week until school started. She always looked forward to her sessions and thought John was very clear in explaining subjects that she didn’t understand. Our daughter has some test anxiety and John’s personality was so calm and encouraging that it helped neutralize the anxiety. His emails to us and to her after each session were always positive and gave her the confidence to do well. We also loved all the practice tests and practice testing sessions that PrepMatters offers. We highly recommend John.
