You’ve likely heard that “Mr. Jefferson” founded the University of Virginia, all the way back in 1819. Now, as UVA celebrates its bicentennial, the University’s standing as a “Public Ivy” is unquestioned. In 2018, US News placed UVA at #3 on its list of best public national universities, while in 2017, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance placed UVA at #2 on its rankings of best public college values.
Thomas Jefferson left his mark on the University in countless ways, from its traditions to its classrooms. One core legacy brought by the first Secretary of State was the importance he placed on learning from other cultures. Five of UVA’s eight original faculty members came from Europe, so a UVA education has prioritized a broad outlook from the beginning. Today, we all understand how we live within a global community, and UVA builds upon its origins by sending its students to study abroad in large numbers, by welcoming international students from well over 100 countries to Charlottesville, and by offering a major and minor – complete with career development services – in Global Studies.
These days, the focus in Charlottesville is on basketball, as the Cavaliers are in the Big Dance for the eighth year in a row and the 23rd time overall. After a close win over Oregon and an epic overtime victory against Purdue in the South Regional Final, UVA — the only #1 seed left in the tournament — is returning to the Final Four for the first time since 1984. Plenty of former Cavaliers (or ‘Hoos, short for Wahoos, the unofficial UVA nickname) have played in the NBA, most notably Ralph Sampson, one of men’s college basketball’s all-time best players ever. Malcolm Brodgon (Milwaukee Bucks), the 2017 NBA Rookie of the Year, leads the pack of UVA alumni currently playing in the pros.
Located in Lubbock, just south of the Texas panhandle, Texas Tech University was established by the state legislature to serve the western part of the massive Lone Star State. Originally launched as a technical college, Texas Tech has grown into a comprehensive research university since opening its doors in 1925.
With over 30,000 undergraduates (everything’s bigger in Texas, right?), Texas Tech is big and growing bigger. In fact, it has set enrollment records over the last ten years – including setting a one-year retention record in 2018. Students are impressed by the renowned beauty of the campus and attracted to the popular Student Leisure Pool (the largest of its kind on an American college campus), which is actually a 645-foot-long lazy river.
Texas Tech is home to top-flight research, with some of its recent successes including developing new technologies for better soil analysis (important for measuring soil fertility and identifying pollutants) and inventing a device that can identify roaming cancer cells in the blood, which represents a potential a first step to halting metastasis.
This year’s Big 12 regular season co-champions, the Texas Tech Red Raiders are making their third NCAA tournament appearance in the last four years. The #3 seed cruised past Northern Kentucky, Buffalo, and Michigan in the first three rounds, and after pulling out an extremely hard-fought victory over #1 seed Gonzaga in the Elite Eight, Texas Tech is now heading to its first-ever men’s Final Four.
