Originally from the cornfields of Iowa (literally), Rod has lived in Maryland for over ten years. Rod graduated from Dartmouth College with a B.A. in History and received his Juris Doctor degree from the Drake University School of Law. Since 2005, Rod has found a home at PrepMatters where he tutors extensively for the SSAT, ISEE, HSPT, SAT, ACT and various SAT subject tests. Rod and his wife Joy live in Columbia, Maryland with their three children: Sammy, Amelia, and Savannah.
Standardized tests are a daunting and sometimes menacing reality for most students applying to high school, college, and graduate school. My fervent goal is to ease the anxiety that most students harbor about these tests by imparting the skills, strategies, and knowledge that I have and the students need. With this assistance and the give-and-take of our sessions, the students gain a confidence that they can and will improve and ultimately succeed. Furthermore, with the busy lives that students lead in today’s world, I try to focus on key areas and give reasonable homework assignments that focus on quality over quantity.
Not only did Rod help me achieve the score I wanted on the SAT by giving me practical and useful techniques, methods and tips, he also gave me the confidence I needed in order to do better. Rod has a great attitude and I greatly enjoyed our time together. I can say with confidence that I have never had a better tutor.
Rod Spies is one of the best tutors I have ever had. With Rod’s tutelage, I was able to achieve far better scores on the ACTs and SAT Subject Tests than I ever thought possible. In our weekly sessions, Rod showed me strategies that helped me to overcome small barriers that were preventing me from achieving test scores that reflect my academic potential. Rod also taught me methods of solving math problems, ideas to consider when examining science theories, and techniques to use when considering a grammatical problem or historical question when the answer seems elusive during a test. Rod always greeted me with a broad smile and always welcomed questions, either big or small. His cheerful disposition and sense of humor made our sessions more fun.
Rod was a spectacular tutor and I would recommend him to anyone who wants to achieve the most they can on the SATs or ACTs.
Rod Spies helped me achieve a fantastic score on my ACT by showing me strategies that would maximize my potential. He kept me motivated to work hard and gave me the confidence I needed to do my best. I also really enjoyed working with him and appreciated his sense of humor.
Rod Spies helped my daughter immensely in preparation for the ACT. My daughter enjoyed her sessions with Rod and he was able to motivate her to do the work. Not only did he give her the strategies, knowledge and techniques needed to take the test, but he encouraged her and gave her the confidence that she needed to believe that she could improve her scores. I was one that believed a tutor could not really help that much, but I was very, very wrong. Her improvement was drastic on the ACT, but it was not just about the scores, it was the confidence he gave her to believe in herself that meant the most to me. He was just amazing with her and I am so thankful to him!
Rod Spies had the insight, experience and wisdom to look deeper into what was holding our son back and to give us guidance as to how we might help him. He went much further that what one would expect of an SAT tutor. Our son enjoyed every session he spent with Rod and their time working together ended up lasting over a year. His confidence in his ability to take tests as well as his self confidence in himself as a student has increased dramatically. We are very grateful to Rod for his thoughtfulness and intelligence. He has had a tremendous impact on our son’s future.
I’m pleased with the overall results of our sessions; they have helped with not just these tests, but also schoolwork as well!
I know that I will miss the support and instruction that you have given our son. Of all the people that have worked with him he truly felt like you were the one who understood him, his goals and his learning style. You were spectacular in your support and the results of your combined efforts. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Thanks for all the progress you have made with our son. He seems to enjoy the sessions with you, which is saying a lot! He never seems to enjoy anything resembling school work.
