Katarina began her work as an essay specialist when she returned to the D.C. area after several years in the Northeast and abroad. She is a proud graduate of the International Baccalaureate program at Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, Maryland, and began her college career at Elon University in North Carolina. After packing in four years’ worth of sweet tea and Southern charm into two semesters, she transferred to Fordham University at Lincoln Center where she graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a B.A. in International Studies.

Katarina began her international experiences as an undergraduate, with a six-month stint in Tunisia, where she worked with teenagers learning English and discovered her passion for tutoring. Following graduation, she accepted a fellowship at the Asian University for Women (AUW) in Bangladesh, where she served as a career adviser, teaching assistant, and writing tutor. Working with students from over 15 different countries on written products, ranging from resumes to senior theses, was the highlight of her fellowship. More recently, Katarina has provided project management and writing support for organizations that include the British Embassy in Washington, Partners in Health, the National Democratic Institute and Oxford University Press.

After being accepted at Harvard, Yale, and Columbia for graduate studies, Katarina chose to become a Master’s candidate in Georgetown University’s Master of Science in Foreign Service program. She currently serves as a teaching assistant for former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright for both graduate and undergraduate courses. She looks forward to continue working with PrepMatters students as they prepare for their own next steps in higher education.

Outside of school and work, Katarina is an American history buff and an Irish dancer. She also enjoys soaking in the natural beauty of the Mid-Atlantic region.


I once read an interview with one of the editors of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, in which she described her role as facilitating a conversation with the author about the impressions she formed from reading the material. Having worked with students around the world, I have consistently found the exchange between author and editor to be the most valuable – and enjoyable – part of the work.
Naturally, we at PrepMatters are happy to advise on grammar, syntax, and the peculiar structure and length of college application essays. I maintain, though, that the most value I can bring to my students is working with them on the tone and message they want to convey. When spending weeks on the same piece, many people lose sight of how it will read to their intended audience or how their chosen vignette meshes with their larger arc. Does their passion for their studies, for research, or for teamwork come through as clearly as it could? Having a conversation about the back story of the essay in front of us leads to an exploration of the image the student wants to project and ultimately to a more forthright, compelling essay.
